Both the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations, and Assessment (CCEA) and the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) have recently released new guidance pertaining to the teaching of RSE (Relationships and Sexuality Education) in schools in Northern Ireland. It also considers further preventative training and resources to ensure children and young people are confidently educated in areas such as consent, pornography, and period dignity.
The aim is to ensure children and young people are further protected from (and empowered in) situations like the Everyone’s Invited release of 2021. In response, CCEA have created an ‘RSE hub’ to provide teachers with more “clarity on classroom strategies for teaching RSE” in ‘priority’ areas. The Department of the Education commissioned the ETI to ‘publish a thematic evaluation of The Preventative Curriculum in Schools’. This evaluation covers primary, post-primary, and special schools (as well as Education Other than at School centres) in order to collect multiple views and experiences.
